About Peter Hemming

If, in April 2000 someone had told me that I would be living on a Greek island in 12 months time I wouldn't have believed them. But at the beginning of 2007 and nearly 6 years on, I was still there. It wasn't planned, it just happened. Some things can stay forever, and sometimes they change overnight and the end of October 2007 saw another important event in my life when I left Kefalonia to live and paint in rural France.

In April 2001 I went to Kefalonia for a summer painting holiday. I stayed on! In May 2002 I opened The Gallery, 4 years later I closed it. I didn't really plan that either. The move to France was planned however, and I hope that it will be my last move.

How long were you in Kefalonia?

From April 3rd 2001 to October 2007.

What made you decide to leave and go to France?

I suppose we know when it's time to move on and I felt that it was the time and France seemed to be pulling me.

What did you do before you left the UK?

I was doing jobs that really couldn't fulfil my inner self artistically. I'd been involved with local groups but I held solo exhibitions.

What has been your biggest challenge in your move to France?

Professionally the biggest challenge is to re-establish myself; but in my social life learning the French language, like Greek, is an awesome task for me.

You were successful in Kefalonia and now you've left it all behind you.

Yes, I was successful, but I felt artistically I was standing still. France is a big country with lots to explore and inspire.

Do you miss anything about Kefalonia and if so, what do you miss most and why?

People make the world go round - not places and the people on the island of Kefalonia are very warm and welcoming. A lot of them used to say to me, 'Peter, you're one of us!' That was the greatest compliment and I think that's probably what I miss - the warmth of the people.

I'm thinking of going to live abroad, can you give me some advice?

Yes. Wherever you live now don't sell up. Go and live abroad for at least a year, and get an information pack from the Embassy of the country you're interested in.

What music do you like?

Van Morrison, Miles Davis, Mahler and so much more.

What's your favourite tipple?

Good real ale and red wine

What is your favourite place in the world?

Malpas, Cornwall, UK

Do you speak French?

I'm sorry, I didn't hear you!
